The Water Festival, an ancient heritage, celebrates the coming of the season of renewal, where Cambodians pay homage to the Mekong River for bestowing its riches on the people of the Kingdom or what was in its origins the Khmer Empire.
Held in November of each year its timing is marked not only by movement in the celestial heavens but also by the reverse flow of the Tonl’e Sap River, caused by the back-up of water from the mighty Mekong as it tries to free itself from the restrictions of the delta and reach it aim of merging with the South China Sea.
